Underground Vegetables! – A quick update on the DooF On Wheels visit Saturday, May 14

DooF On Wheels had another amazing day, this time on the trail of onions and other vegetables that do their best work underground. We started at the Grand Lake Market in Oakland then puttered down the coast to Blue House Organic Farm in Pescadero in our specially marked vehicle that runs on recycled french fry grease from McDonalds (yes, I am lovin it!). One of the things I love about DooF is the ability to connect with the folks who “share their knowledge and passion” for healthy, sustainable food.

Grand Lake Market Manager Brad Burger gave us run of his very crowded but wonderful market, and we took full advantage by getting great video footage we’ll be sharing in a few weeks. Thanks Brad! Olympia from Toscano and Sons shared a wealth of hands-on information about onions. And we had fun pooling knowledge with passers-by as the kids “grilled” them about onion varieties and other Doofanalia. Thanks to Olympia and all the folks who participated!

You know why the ancient Egyptians buried their Pharoahs with onions? Cause when the angel of death comes a knockin, the Pharoah (after eating an onion) just says, “Whooo’s there?”

The DooF On Wheels Team explains to organic farmer Ned Conwell how onions are grown

I cannot even do justice in writing to the magic of our visit Blue House Organic Farms (but hopefully our video will). Farmer Ned Conwell took time from his insanely busy schedule to get to the root of questions like, “What makes an onion sweet?” and the difference between beets and radishes. The kids pulled up and consumed a bounty of produce from the Earth and enjoyed some “extra-curricular” strawberries for dessert. Thanks so much, Ned! Find out more about Blue House here.

I want to add, in full disclosure, that our DooF On Wheels vehicle is actually borrowed from Greg Matthews, whose girlfriend, Sarah Nelson, in her capacity as Special Projects Coordinator for the Pacific Coast Farmers’ Market Association, has helped make many of these DooF On Wheels visits possible. Thanks Sarah and Greg. You rock!
