Planet DooF

Solarship Log: DSS Gastronomy…
Meet the Doofians – If aliens came to Earth from a planet without food as we know it, how would you explain the tasty tangle we call spaghetti? Or the cool culture of yogurt? The Doofians challenge Earth kids to discover the What, Why, When, Where and Fun of food through visits with food experts and regular Earthlings at markets, farms, and home kitchens. Click on a Doofian to find out more.

Gloop – What sort of planet is this that has no plants and animals? DooF is the smallest of three planets that orbit an orange sun in a distant galaxy. DooF has never sustained any life beyond that of the Doofians themselves, who live on a petroleum-like substance called Gloop that they drill from beneath their planet’s surface. In addition to being edible, Gloop also has the versatility of petroleum, which enables the Doofians to manufacture all kinds of materials from it. Besides Gloop, the Doofians’ major innovation is a technology that allows them to exceed light speed, so they can cross great distances, and go back in time.

BITE (The Bureau for Intelligent Transgalactic Eating…duh) is a little-known sub-branch of NASA. Tasked with the mission to ensure that beings in the universe eat healthy, we blasted a million packets of food into the cosmos, but didn’t really expect a response. It was with some surprise then that aliens from Planet DooF appeared in our orbit, wanting to know more about this “food” thing. NASA mistook them at first for a rival space crew’s Halloween celebration then quickly called BITE. We came up with the brilliant plan to teach them about food by having them observe the explorations of a group of kids. Doofians understand that children are a higher form of being. If only they got that on Earth! We’ve intercepted these passages from their solarship’s log as they attempt in their way to make “head or tail” of cabbages and other food items that appear on their radar.
