DOOFERS IN THE NEWS
DooF
producer/co-head writer/segment director CHRIS BROWN held the
world premiere of his feature film, Scared New World, early October
at the Mill Valley Film Festival. An intimate story about three
roommates, Scared New World has been hailed by VARIETY as solidly
in the tradition of pioneer indie pics like Cassavetes' Shadows
fests
looking to showcase new Amerindie talent should take note.
Audiencemag.com
calls Chriss latest work A charming 82 minutes of
insight
it just goes to prove what genius can do when pressed.
Critic and programmer Peter Moore predicts that this emotionally
satisfying, tightly scripted film may be a Scared
New World for some, but for most, it augurs a bright future of
filmmaking.
Chris shot and directed the film entirely in Oakland, where it
will screen on November 8th at the Parkway Theater as part of
the 21st Annual Film Arts Festival.

DOOF KID OF THE MONTH
Meet
veteran DooF performer, PASCAL DEJOIE. Pascal is an 11 year-old
6th grader at Longfellow Middle School in Berkeley. When asked
what he liked best about school, he replied, the food!
In his spare time, Pascal plays basketball in UC Berkeleys
Albany Village league. For the last four months, he has also been
learning Buk Fu Karate.
A member of the Stiles Hall Scholars program, Pascal is
a talented artist who enjoys drawing wrestlers, super heroes and
athletes.
Having acted in many of DooFs educational shorts, Pascal
was a featured player in Food Talks! where he enjoyed
working with rapper Tommy Shepard (alias Nefarious P). Hes
really cool, Pascal said, just like me and (best friend)
Kalee.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH: Apple & Cabbage Salad à la
DooF
1/2 medium head cabbage (red or
Savoy are best), cut in thin shreds
1/2 medium onion, sliced thin
2 medium apples (try Golden Delicious or Granny Smith)
1 tablespoon lemon juice |
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar, according to taste |
Place shredded cabbage and onions in a large bowl and set aside.
Quarter and core the apple, cut into 1/8-inch slices, and toss
with the lemon juice. Add apples and salt to the bowl of cabbage.
For Cold Salad: Add olive oil, vinegar, and 1/2 teaspoon celery
seed to the bowl and toss well. Let stand for 10 minutes for cabbage
to soften slightly and flavors to mingle.
For Warm Vegetable: Place olive oil in a large sauté pan
over medium heat. When almost smoking, carefully add the bowl
of cabbage, onion and apple to the pan, along with a bay leaf.
Stir briskly until cabbage starts to wilt. Add vinegar. Cover
pan and lower heat. Cook for 15 min, or until cabbage is crisp/tender.
Add a little water if the pan seems dry and cabbage starts to
burn before it is tender.
